RESEARCH CENTERS

Center for Biomechanical Engineering Research

CBER is an interdisciplinary center whose mission is to provide engineering science and clinical technology to reduce the impact of disease on the everyday life of individuals. CBER builds on a history of interaction between the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Physical Therapy, Biological Sciences, and Kinesiology and Applied Physiology. A number of research topics are being addressed involving sports medicine (especially ACL injuries), medical imaging (especially MRI and ultrasound), modeling the neural control of limb movements, the use of FES and robots in rehabilitation following stroke, the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, modeling fatigue in skeletal muscle, and fluid and solute transport in bone. Center for Composite Materials

The Center for Composite Materials was founded at the University of Delaware in 1974, and just four years later our consortium, Application of Composite Materials to Industrial Products, was established. Since then, we have collaborated with some 210 companies representing materials suppliers and end users in the aerospace, automotive, defense and durable goods industries.

Industry has provided more than $20 million in gift support to the Center in the three decades since we started the consortium, and we have used these funds to establish state-of-the-art facilities in our Composites Manufacturing Science Laboratory and our Application and Technology Transfer Laboratory as well as to support the work of our talented faculty, staff, and students. Delaware Biotechnology Institute

The Delaware Biotechnology Institute is a magnet for life science research and development. We support multidisciplinary, collaborative academic research at all of Delaware’s research organizations including the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Christiana Care Health System, Nemours / AI DuPont Hospital for Children, Wesley College, and Delaware Technical and Community College. We foster academic-industrial research partnerships and work to support the local bioscience industry (from start-ups to multinationals) in partnership with the Delaware Bioscience Association. We are also committed to inspiring the next generation scientist and the professional development of their teachers through our Science for All Delawareans outreach programs. Find out more.

Delaware Rehabilitation Institute

The Delaware Rehabilitation Institute (DRI) is devoted to research, education and practice in rehabilitation. Our mission is to find innovative and improved ways to help people recover from injury and disease by providing an intellectual hub for clinicians, scientists, engineers and policy-makers to work together to improve the state of the art in rehabilitation medicine.

Our research ranges from the bench to the bedside, enabling us to take our breakthrough findings from the laboratory to the clinic and provide rehabilitation to the people of Delaware in all phases of the lifespan from infants to the elderly. DRI has more than 50 faculty members in five colleges and ten departments conducting research in this area across the University of Delaware campuses. Find out more.

College of Engineering Machine Shop

The College of Engineering machine shop consists of a full-service research shop that provides machining, assembly and fabrication services in support of research projects and instructional laboratories for College of Engineering students, staff and faculty working on University projects. Find out more by visiting the Machine Shop.

Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Lab

The University of Delaware’s Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory (ISE Lab) is a hub of teaching and research on campus. The 194,000-square-foot facility brings together students and faculty from various disciplines to teach, learn and conduct research in a collaborative environment. Research provides content for the curriculum and students learn through the exploration of real-world problems.

Completed in 2013, ISE Lab engages students and stimulates excitement about science and engineering.

Inside you will not find large lecture halls. No classroom holds more than 48 students. ISE Lab’s four problem-based learning instructional laboratories feature lab spaces adjoining classrooms so students can discuss a problem and then immediately test a solution. Nanofabrication Facility

Housed in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, the 8,500 square feet state-of-the-art class 10/100/1000 and 10000 clean rooms represent a $20 Million investment. This world-class facility is fueling innovation in semiconductor device and circuit fabrication, microsystems and MEMs technology, nanophotonics, and nanobiotechnology. Find out more by visiting Nanofabrication Facility.

NMR Facility

The NMR Facility currently has six NMR spectrometers. The NMR facilities are located in the basement floor of the North Wing of Brown Laboratories (BRL). The 600 MHz instrument is housed in 015 BRL, and the remaining spectrometers are located across the hallway in three adjacent rooms (011, 011A and 021 BRL). Find out more by visiting NMR Facility.

eCalc

During spring and fall semesters these rooms are typically used for courses; M-F 8am-9pm. Rooms are available for drop in when not used for classes or closed for maintenance. Rooms are unlocked M-F 8am-6pm. All other times authorized personnel may access the rooms via UD ID card swipe. Authorized personnel may enter Spencer Lab via card swipe at the west side handicap accessible main entrance. Access to Spencer Lab allows access to Ecalcs 1 and 3. Authorized personnel may enter Evans Hall via card swipe at the north side handicap accessible entrance. Access to Evans Hall allows access to Ecalc 2. Authorized personnel are: All college of engineering faculty, staff and students; AND; all non-engineering faculty and students taking engineering courses. Find out more by visiting eCalc.

Student Machine Shop

The mission of the student machine shop is to support educational programs at the University of Delaware by providing a safe and well supervised facility for students to have the opportunity for hands-on fabrication and manufacturing experience. Programs currently supported by the shop include but are not limited to Undergraduate and Graduate Curriculums, Honors Programs, Student Research, and Student Clubs. The prioritized list of users and activities in the shop includes:

  • Assignments for regularly scheduled classes that have been coordinated with the Shop Supervisor
  • Independent study or undergraduate research projects taken for credit
  • Student club activities*
  • Undergraduates and Graduate Students working with a faculty member on a teaching or research project*
  • Faculty and other university employees*

WM Keck Imaging Facility

The W.M. Keck Electron Microscopy Facility is a multi-user laboratory at the University of Delaware and in the region. Anyone on UD campus or from outside who needs to use the facility for research/development and/or teaching is welcome to do so. Find out more by visiting WM Keck Imaging Facility.
